Counseling for Children in Colorado Springs

Is your child angry, distant, or shut down? Children can benefit from counseling just like adults, although it looks a little different. Developmentally, children are often unable to use verbal language to express their thoughts and feelings about what is troubling them. Play Therapy is used to help children resolve inner conflicts and to learn adaptive behaviors. Play Therapy involves the use of toys, blocks, dolls, puppets, drawings and games to help the child recognize, identify, and verbalize feelings. I observe how the child uses play materials and I identify themes or patterns to understand the child’s feelings and problems. Through a combination of talk and play the child has an opportunity to better understand and manage his/her conflicts, feelings, and behaviors.

My Colorado Springs Counseling Practice is here to help!

Sometimes children have trouble discussing their feelings with their parents. They may be worried that they will get in trouble, or that their parents will be hurt or upset with them.  Or they may be trying to express their feelings in inappropriate ways such as temper tantrums, defiant behavior, or angry outbursts.  Play therapy can provide a safe and consequence-free environment where children can gain insight into their emotions, and learn tools to effectively manage challenges in their lives.  Parents can stay involved by helping their child practice their new skills at home and provide empathy and encouragement.
